About Dr. Nunery

Dr. Nunery
Dr. Nunery was the first oculoplastic surgeon to practice in Indianapolis. After graduating from DePauw University, he attended medical school at Case Western Reserve. He then completed his internship in San Diego, a three-year residency at Indiana University, then a one-year oculoplastics fellowship in Atlanta at Emory University. He is now training his 12th fellow in what is now a two-year fellowship in oculoplastics.
Dr. Nunery is a distinguished lecturer on various ophthalmic plastic surgery-related topics, and is known worldwide for his contributions to oculoplastics. He is the author of numerous published articles and textbooks on such subjects as ophthalmic Graves’ disease, aesthetic results after enucleation surgery, the importance of early volume replacement in reconstruction of congenital anophthalmia, and new approaches in repairing mid-facial bony trauma. He was the first to describe various subtypes of ophthalmic Graves’ disease, as well as the results of decompression surgery on these subtypes. He was also among the first to describe the association of cigarette smoking with Graves’ disease and continues to actively research the effects of thyroid-related disease on the eyes.
Dr. Nunery has lectured internationally in Canada and South Africa, and has been the visiting professor at numerous universities, including Harvard, Yale, Laval University, and UCLA. He has served as program director, secretary, treasurer and president of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and as president of the Indianapolis Ophthalmological Society.
Dr. Nunery and his wife, Mathieu, are active in their church and enjoy music, ballroom dancing and outdoor activities, including skiing, mountain climbing, hiking and camping.
